What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry is dental care that helps maintain good oral health. It’s a combination of regular dental checkups along with developing good habits like brushing and flossing. Caring for your teeth starts early in childhood and continues throughout your life.

Our services

In our clinic we deal with all incidents of a dental nature

What does preventive dentistry include?

1. Regular visits to the dentist, usually every 6 months

2. Teeth cleaning

3. X-rays, where necessary

Much of your preventive dental care starts with you. Developing healthy dental habits early in life can help reduce gum disease such as tooth decay and gingivitis. Here are the basics of good oral health:

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day-usually morning and evening-using a soft-bristled brush and a fluoride toothpaste. (Your dentist can recommend the best toothbrush and toothpaste for you. He can also guide you on proper brushing.)

2. Floss daily to effectively clean the spaces between the teeth as well as the lateral surfaces of the teeth up to the deepest part of the gingival crevice. Use mouthwash to rinse after flossing.
3. Avoid acidic foods that can damage tooth enamel.
(Be careful with hard foods such as candies, foods with bones, nuts or seeds that could damage or break teeth.)
4. Use mouth splints when participating in certain sports.
5. If you grind your teeth at night or during the day, ask your dentist for a mouth guard to protect your teeth from grinding.

What is preventive dentistry for children?

As soon as a child has his or her first tooth (6 months old), preventive dental care can begin. Preventive dentistry for children can help identify problems early in your child’s life before dental problems become worse and often more costly. Services typically include the following:

Make good oral habits-including brushing and flossing, guidance on thumb sucking, and advice on eating habits that help improve dental health-part of your daily routine. Also:

1) Regular teeth cleaning and oral examinations, usually every 6 months.
2) Fluoridation (usually up to a certain age)
3) X-rays to help monitor jaw and tooth development.
4) Placement of a special mouth splint in case of sports activities
5) Referral to an orthodontic specialist if the teeth are crooked
6) Referral to other dental specialists as needed

What are the benefits of preventive dentistry?

Regular preventive dental checkups provide the following benefits to your oral health:

1) Reduces the risk of tooth decay, gum disease and more serious dental problems.
2) Helps promote good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing.
3) Early identification of dental problems can help minimize treatment and costs.
4) Allow your dentist to do a complete examination of your mouth, jaw, throat, etc. to identify any associated problems.
5) Helps reduce dental problems associated with certain chronic conditions. Diabetes, osteoporosis, certain types of cancer and eating disorders can have an effect on dental and oral health. For people with chronic conditions, regular preventive dental care is an important part of a person’s health.
